Rapid advancements in train control and in-cab technologies provide significant opportunities for rail operators to improve efficiency and enhance their operations. New technologies often provide elegant solutions to existing problems or new capabilities for the operator. However, new technologies may also represent a significant form of risk. Thus, it is important to balance the potential for significant improvement with justifiable concern about how the technology may unpredictably change the nature of the work. If a technology is designed and implemented without considering the substantive human factors concerns, that technology may lead to unintended consequences that can introduce safety issues and disrupt network performance. It is important to note that even a well-designed and beneficial technology may be rejected by the users who see it as a threat to their jobs, status or working conditions. This book discusses the issues surrounding rail technology and introduces a 'toolkit' of human factors evaluation methods. The toolkit provides a practical and operationally focused set of methods that can be used by managers considering investing in technology, staff charged with implementing a technology, and consultants engaged to assist with the design and evaluation process. This toolkit can help to ensure that new rail technologies are thoughtfully designed, effectively implemented, and well received by users so that the significant investment associated with developing rail technologies is not wasted.

Hamid Naweed has received his M.F.A from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was the professor of art history, color theory, studio arts, and art appreciation at the Fine Arts Department of Kabul University and is now an honorary member of the High Counsel of Arts, Center for Contemporary in Arts Afghanistan and Kabul University Faculty of Fine Arts. Hamid Naweed is also the Cultural Director of "Alliance for the Restoration of Cultural Heritage" (ARCH), based in Washington, DC. As a Fulbright scholar, he has conducted many research studies in the field of arts and humanities. Naweed is the author of the novel, The Music of The Reeds. He has also authored a number of scholarly essays on the art and culture of Afghanistan and the region and has given talks on the same topics at George Washington University, George Mason University, John Hopkins University, Columbia University and the Historical Society of Williamsburg. His script for the Movie "Loori" won "New York International Film Festival's Best Feature Film Prize in 2008. Hamid Naweed is also an accomplished artist who works in oil and acrylics. As a recognized poet of Dari, Naweed is an active member of the Afghan Poetic Society (Sham-i- Erfan). His lectures on art and literature have been widely aired by the Radio Voice of America Dari Service, Ariana Afghan TV Network, Zarin TV, and Radio Naqsh- Hai-e Jawidan, based in the Bay Area of California servicing the Afghan Community. Art through the Ages in Afghanistan, written in two volumes is a major work. It is the product of many years of research, including frequents visits to Kabul Museum and important archeological sites in Afghanistan, as well as visits to major museums in Europe and America housing important artifacts from Afghanistan. In completing his work Naweed has also made use of numerous interviews with Afghan and international scholars, local artist and local people living in the vicinity of historical sites. The second volume covering the art of Afghanistan from the advent of Islam through present time is expected to be published shortly after the publication of the first volume.
"The Music of The Reeds" speaks about the inner feelings, aspirations, and agonies of Jalaludin Rumi and the glory of love in his personal life that made him to become the greatest mystic poet of all times. Mowlana Jalaludin Balkhi, known also as Rumi was born in Balkh, Afghanistan in 1206 AD. His father Bahaudin-walad, the most prestigious scholar of Khurasan decided to leave Balkh and move to Konya, Turkey just before the Mongolian invasion of Islamic countries in 1221 AD. The story begins with Jalaludin's childhood when he was joyfully playing with his friends in the reed beds in the city of Balkh, and continues until he meets Shams Tabrizi, and a young girl by name of Kimia, the two people that Jalaludin was deeply touched and inspired by to think differently.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Australasian Simulation Congress, ASC 2019, held in Gold Coast, Australia in September 2019. The 10 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 17 submissions. They provide a forum for sharing progresses in the areas of human dimensions; gaming experience; design and application; search and rescue; defence-oriented technology and training.
This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the 21st Annual Simulation Technology and Training Conference, SimTecT 2016, and the 47th International Simulation and Gaming Association Conference, ISAGA 2016, Held as Part of the First Australasian Simulation Congress, ASC 2016, held in Melbourne, VIC, Australia, in September 2016. The 28 revised full papers included in the volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 55 submissions.
